Through her practice of glimpsing, seeing, and foreseeing, Mariane looks for signs of the “extra ordinary,” in a relationship to the world that is resolutely open to the unexpected. Deeply rooted in the countryside of upper Lac [Saint-Jean], where she grew up, she has cultivated a sensitivity to the wondrous variations in perception and to the eloquence of visual silence. In her multifaceted body of work as well as in her writings, meaning emerges practically out of nothing, out of the unnoticed and the subconscious, according to the logic of resonance rather than fact. She composes works based on intentional synchronicities and moments, places, and objects imbued with deep meaning. The creative methods she employs are intrinsic to the meanings they take on: each installation is a unique response to a specific reflective or receptive experience. Through creative combinations of certain materials and technical processes, she translates her research into installations, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and videos. Collectively, her works evoke a network of meaning and symbols that interact with one another, like subtle nods.

For the Presences project, Mariane explored creative filiation in the company of her three-year-old son during a multi-day autumn art adventure in the wilderness, at a refuge hut in the Vallée des Géants on Mont Édouard. Together, they carried out a series of experiments exploring the techniques and tools of dowsing, using copper as a conductive material, and the collection of symbolic elements that could be used to create miniatures. In addition to a body of visual and soundworks, the outcome of this research-creation project took the form of an artist’s book.

Based in Larouche, in the Haut-Saguenay region, Mariane Tremblay contributes to the visual arts community as an artist, writer, and cultural worker. Over the past decade, her work—both as part of a collective and as a solo artist—has been exhibited throughout Quebec, New Brunswick, and Manitoba. She is actively involved with both temporary and permanent collectives, notably the Club de prospection figurée. Her numerous collaborations with other artists have led her to contribute to various publications and periodicals in France, Germany, and Quebec, in addition to her micro-publishing house, the Éditions des Non-dits, which specializes in book-objects. She holds a MFA and an interdisciplinary BFA from the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Alongside her artistic practice, she dedicates her time to artistic mediation and teaching at the junior college level.

Mariane Tremblay has been selected by Vaste et Vague as part of the PRÉSENCES project. Following her residency at Centre SAGAMIE, she will participate in a group exhibition at Vaste et Vague in the summer of 2026.
