"Hello, my name is Janick. I grew up in the house you live in."
Aux occupant·e·s is an artist's book project that began when I posted a letter to the people who now live in my childhood home. In the envelope, I also included a photograph of the house featuring people I don't know, but which I have nevertheless always kept. Using this image as a starting point, I try to think about the book in the same way one thinks about home, somewhere between reality, imagination, dreams, and oblivion.
Janick Burn is an artist, author, and curator originally from Outaouais/Anishinabewaki who has lived in Montreal/Tio’tia:ké for several years. Her practical and theoretical research focuses on the relationship between the body and the frame, which she approaches through a reflexive approach to performance, images, and writing. She explores the off-screen space, which she envisions (when chosen) as a space of freedom where one can emancipate oneself from frameworks—of images, society, and norms. Over the last few years, she taken an interest in publishing as an artistic practice and alternative exhibition mode. She organized the group exhibition Exposer avec l’autoédition to expose the self— (AdMare; 2022, Arprim; 2023) and has undertaken several research residencies (Dare-Dare 2023; Est-Nord-Est, 2023; la Chambre blanche, 2024; AdMare, 2025). She regularly publishes reviews in Le Sabord and contemporary art magazines.
