Henricks’s early single-channel videos explored identity in relation to notions of the autobiographical voice; his later works examined the nature of consciousness in relation to time and perception. Since 1999, he has increasingly worked with multi-channel video installations. His single- and multi-channel video works are complemented by explorations in photography and other media.
Both poetic and ironic, Henricks’s work is rooted in experimentation while remaining grounded in popular culture. Much of his production in the 2000s focused on different ways of making sound visible. His concern with rendering the invisible visible is accompanied by an interest in translating phenomena from one material or medium to another. During his residency at Sagamie, he will continue to explore the translation of sound into image while questioning conventional ideas about aesthetics and representation.
An artist and curator, Henricks is best known for his video works and video installations, which have been exhibited worldwide. An exhibition of his work was presented at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal in 2023. His works are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, among others. He is represented by Paul Petro Contemporary Art gallery.
