Frédéric Laforge is strongly interested in questions of diversity and identity. This is reflected in his in-depth research into atypical bodies and the representation of bodily diversity. This interest is rooted in, among other things, a reflection on memorial statues in which he questions the notion of the heroic figure and the persons that are traditionally memorialized. Perceptual issues are also central to his practice, which is why he focuses on the way in which aesthetic experience stimulates viewers to see their reality in a different light.
Frédéric Laforge lives and works in Montréal. In 2016, he earned a PhD in Art Studies and Practices. His work has been shown in Canada and abroad in several solo and group exhibitions. He participated in the Quebec Manif d'art, the Foire Papier, the Vrsac Biennale in Serbia and the Scope Art Show in New York City. The National Museum of Printmaking in Mexico City recently exhibited his work. Laforge has received numerous scholarships from the Conseil des arts et des lettres and the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as from the Fonds de recherche Société et culture du Québec. He has also created various public art projects in Canada. His works are part of private and institutional collections, including the one at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec. Moreover, he participated in an exhibition on bodily diversity presented in the summer of 2021 at this very museum.
