Hailing from Baie-Comeau in Quebec's Côte-Nord region, Emy G. St-Laurent is an emerging visual artist. Her practice is guided by an interest in ecology in the broad sense(s). She holds a BFA in painting and drawing from Concordia University (2013), as well as an MFA from Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (2024). She has been living and working in Saguenay since 2021.
Her practice is rooted in a deep appreciation for the aesthetic qualities of the natural sciences and the methodology of living systems. Following a decidedly biomorphic analogy, she organizes her textile sculpture practice in a cellular manner to explore volumes and mosaics that evoke both microscopic patterns and a vastness observed from a bird’s-eye perspective. A process that results in fantastical ecosystems, consisting of immersive installations and visual works which can be viewed directly within this built landscape. As the creative process unfolds, the works break down to adapt to their environment and evolve into new forms, much like a formal genealogy that becomes the vehicle through which these iterations proliferate.
Emy’s work celebrates the abundance of living things—omnipresent yet sometimes hidden behind staggering scales of magnitude that she seeks to superimpose. For her, it is a constant pursuit of wonder through which she aims to share an ecological sensibility, coupled with a questioning of humanity’s role as the lead actor.
