Christine Comeau is an artist and cultural worker. Her practice draws on contextual art, performed installation, textile sculpture and living poetry. Her research focuses on matters of mobility, exile, limits and the physical and mental barriers brought about by moving from place to place. Since the start of her career, her creative work has been rooted in an exploration of nomadism as the metaphor of an identity quest, both on a personal and a collective level. To this end, she designs and makes temporary shelters and “relational clothing” into which two or several persons are often required to slip into. In the process, they are impelled to connect with one another, both physically and symbolically, in a relationship marked by intimacy, sharing and negotiation. This clothing also serves as camouflage, blurring the external markers of the participants' individual identities. All this leads to performed installations that induce a radical change in both outer and inner scenery. The idea of a shifting identity forged by the time and space travelled across is ubiquitous here. Rather than being rooted in a sole place, the artist has chosen to travel, engage with and inhabit the land. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in several artist-run centres in Quebec, Canada, the US, Germany, Sweden and Brazil. Christine Comeau has also carried out many artist residencies. She hold a MA in interdisciplinary studies from Université Laval. She lives and works in Quebec City.
