Catherine Béchard's and Sabin Hudon's collaborative practice probes the in-between spaces linked to inhabited territories, as well as the alternative or parallel temporalities of all living beings’ activities. Attentive listening along with elements that escape our immediate perceptions of the world are at the core of their practice. They take a particular interest in the notion of the habitat and the micro-habitat, which they explore through a focus on the singular characteristic and infinite configurations present in environments inhabited by various life forms. They also analyze and study the acoustic phenomena that are at the heart of these environments. In order to raise our awareness of an environment’s complexity and abundance of life forms, the artists focus on the space-time of various biotopes to reveal a world beyond the threshold of what is ordinarily audible and visible. Their research projects and artworks take the form of installations, sculptures, soundworks, videos and photographs. Their work has been presented as part of solo and group exhibitions in many cities in Canada, the Czech Republic, Brazil, the US, Germany, Croatia and China.

In the summer of 2024, Béchard & Hudon began a research project in partnership with Galerie UQO and researchers from ISFORT (Institute of temperate forest sciences, UQO). As part of this project, they have undertaken several research expeditions in Outaouais forests, which they will continue until 2026. During their residency at Centre SAGAMIE, they will work on a series of photographs they took in old growth forest, as well as in others that are currently under observation as part of experimental frameworks. They used a full spectrum camera to extend our gaze beyond the visible light spectrum and to thus reveal what goes on in the depths of the forest. With a diplomatic sensitivity to other species, they wish to highlight the crucial role that these forest habitats play in the preservation of our interspecies relationships in a “politics of interdependencies.” The results of their work will be exhibited at Galerie UQO in March 2026. Their project Monologue de la forêt has received residency and coproduction support from the Outaouais Territorial Partnership Program of the CALQ, with additional support provided by the Canada Council for the Arts.
