For several years Kaël Mercader pursued a practice that involves drawing, performance and illustration. Today, painting has become his main medium. His paintings depict people in action set against rural and bucolic landscapes. Drawing on his memories, dreams, and stories from loved ones, he captures the simple pleasures of vacationing: moments of leisure, relaxation, and carefree times. Like memories altered by the passage of time, incongruous and anachronistic elements find their way into these scenes, lending them a touch of strangeness, humour, and nostalgia. With numerous references to art history, he seeks to evoke emotions in the viewer such as laughter, unease, or a sense of déjà vu. He transcribes natural phenomena such as the effects of light and the kinetics of animals and plants. His artistic practice revolves around play, pleasure, and dreams.
