Le Phénomène du dortoir is a collaborative project between Isabelle Guimond and Carolyne Scenna. Taken from an expression that describes the synchronization of the menstrual cycles of women living in closed communities, the project is rooted in a spirit of both cooperation, and provocation. In the artists' mind, the phenomenon reads as a perfect, and humorous analogy of an idealized artistic collaboration. Over time, practices harmonize through communal actions, influence, touch, and shared space. Organic rhythms form and inform both mood and method. Reciprocal emulations generate a desire to outperform one's self - for the other, and through the other - to push respective limits. By choosing to work together, they have commited to act as reciprocal curators. This grants them the authority to make a series of decisions for the other. Between special assignments, exclusive commissions and directed proposals, this way of making expands creative boundaries and requires absolute trust in the other's view of their work. Le Phénomène du dortoir is simultaneously a space of research, a performative space, and a space of diffusion where specific aspects of their respective works intersect and contaminate each other. The residency at Centre SAGAMIE will allow them to explore, behind closed doors, the portion of printed art that will be part of the exhibition to be hosted at Skol between January 14 and February 27, 2021.
