Influenced by atmospheric movements both in the literal and figurative sense, Laura Demers creates by experimenting with various processes and materials that react in contact with the elements. She draws with charcoal pigments that are dispersed by the wind and liquefied by the rain. She makes use of sunlight to compose cyanotype images. Her work is modulated by the rhythm of the seasons and it seeks to better understand the precarious relationship we have with our immediate natural surroundings. She examines issues pertaining to ecology, technology, human modifications of nature, and more particularly climate engineering and its consequences on the environment. She has a preference for a poetic and metaphorical manner of presenting subjects, because this approach allows her to better hone in on the meaning of things.

Laura Demers is an emerging artist, writer and independent curator. She comes from a farming town in the heart of Prescott-Russel in Ontario, and she now lives in Ontario and Quebec; she has also been published in magazines such as C Magazine, Blank Cheque Press, Prefix Photo, Public Parking, and several others. She holds an BFA in painting and drawing from the University of Ottawa (2015) and an MA in art history and art theory from the University of Toronto (2017). She is the co-founder of the artist-run gallery the plumb (theplumb.ca), where she hold a position as an administrator and curator.
