Frédéric Lavoie is an artist-naturalist based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal. He holds a BA in anthropology and a MFA in visual and media arts. In his creative practice he applies the curiosity of a mycologist, the patience of an ornithologist and the sharp eye of an entomologist. He takes a broad interest in living things and the relationships that bind us to non-human worlds, following in the traces of caterpillars, fungi, and nocturnal birds. Through a diverse practice that draws on documentary elements, he creates narratives, group portraits or thematic analyses. Guided by an immersive and educational approach, his research centers on issues related to listening and observation, the concept of biodiversity, and the relationship between nature and culture, His films FunFungi (2022) and La nature contre-attaque (2019) have been shown in Québec and Hungary. He has presented the solo exhibitions Le début de la fin / The End of the Beginning at the Musée McCord (2014) and Réécritures (2014) at the Musée régional de Rimouski, as well as De visu (2025) at the MAC LAU and Insecta Mundi (2025) at Biosphère, which display his recent work. During his residency at Centre SAGAMIE, he will work on a video-photographic installation of macroscopic views of insects and birds. These singular encounters of individuals-animals will be presented at the 2025 Foire en art actuel de Québec (FAAQ).
