Desire to Reside

Practice in residency 1997-2011

This book testifies to the creative experiences of artist Sylvie Cotton during her residency. Here the artist is also the author of the essay, which makes this book a fundamental tool explaining the notion of residency. Sylvie Cotton is an interdisciplinary artist living in Montreal. Her research inspires the situations that existence offers her to exhale them in the field of art, illuminating exchanges with others or encounters with phenomena and their perception as directly as possible.

Her projects are most often in situ but also by what she calls in spiritu, i.e. in union with the state of mind of the moment of creation. In order to realize them, she uses various artistic forms : performance and action art, drawing, photography, installation and writing (aphorisms and diagrams). The residency is also conceived as a medium and a practice in its own right. In fact, she experiences her first residencies as performances, where the temporal format becomes a medium in itself that the artist exploits according to five axes  : "tempting what tente ", "deploying the inner workshop", "knowing how to wait without having the time", " dénoyauter the intentions" and "communing with space".

Sylvie Cotton

In 2001, Sylvie Cotton, as a consultant for the Regroupement des centres d'artistes autogérés du Québec (RCAAQ), conducted a study on the reception of artists in residence in the centres. She participated in the ResArtis international conferences in Helsinki in 2003 and in Montreal in 2010. Since 2001, in addition to having created projects and given conferences in Quebec, Canada and other countries (Serbia, Italy, Poland, Germany, Spain, Estonia, United States, Finland, Japan), Sylvie Cotton has produced two artist books, Je préfère tout and On est tous la même personne.
